Nestlings was selected and sponsored by Macatawa Resource Center (MRC) to be part of their new Social Entrepreneurship & Incubator Program; a program designed to encourage social entrepreneurship and aid in the establishment and success of promising new social service nonprofits who aid the disadvantaged in the greater Ottawa and Allegan County community and beyond.

Diaper need continues to be a large unmet need in our community. This office space and MRC’s new incubator program will enable us to spread our wings and continue our mission of diapering babies in need.

Please share in our excitement about this new opportunity by stopping by during our open house.

Give 5 Diaper Drive Kicks Off

Did you know December has 5 Saturdays, 5 Sundays and 5 Mondays?
How can you “celebrate” this rare occurrence?
Be a Part of Nestlings “Give 5” Diaper Drive and Fundraiser!

When?

December 5 – January 5

Nestlings “Give 5” diaper drive will be an opportunity to show care and compassion for infants and toddlers by providing one of their most basic, but often overlooked, needs – diapers.
The goal is to collect $5,000 and 5,000 Diapers in size 5.

Why?

Diaper donations prevent the suffering that many children experience from sitting in wet diapers for extended periods of time as more and more parents are forced to choose between paying for food and rent or buying diapers. (A supply of diapers for one child for just one month can cost $75-$125).

Financial donations will help us support additional social service agencies and churches by supplying them with diapers. We have been able to support 14 organizations this past year and supplied over 50,000 diapers but we have a waiting list of other wonderful agencies and programs.

How?

— Take 5 minutes and place a quick online order for Luvs Size 5 Diapers 150 Count – they can ship direct to us for no additional charge!

— Ask 5 friends to donate $5 to help the cause of diaper need and mail your donation

— Share this “Give 5” Diaper Drive and Fundraiser via email to 5 others (And, no, nothing will happen to your screen if you do it – as some oft circulated forwards might tell you, but you will be making a difference in the lives of infants and toddlers by helping others become aware of the need for diapers and encouraging them to get involved).

Thank you for making an amazing difference in 5 minutes or with $5.00!

Allendale Grant Funds will Provide for One of Babies Greatest Needs

Nestlings is very thankful for a $1,000 grant received from the Allendale Greatest Needs Fund of the Allendale Community Foundation. Grant funds are rarely issued for consumable items, such as diapers and wipes, so receiving this grant shows the commitment of the Allendale Community Foundation to infants and toddlers in their community and also their awareness of the great need for diapers.

Diapers are a large unmet need that fall into a void of items not covered by State or Federal assistance programs. Occasionally a pantry, church, or agency may receive diaper donations into their programs but they go out as fast as they come in. Nestlings goal is to provide a consistent supply of diapers available in all sizes to these programs.

We have been thankful to collaborate with Valley Church so they can support families in the Allendale area through their Diaper Store. On the second and fourth Saturday of every month, the Valley Church Diaper Store distributes diapers – free of charge – to families in need, referred to them by Love Inc.

The Allendale Greatest Needs Fund of the Allendale Community Foundation grant dollars will be used to buy diapers specifically for the Valley Church Diaper Store in Allendale. Nestlings relationship with a diaper supplier will enable us to purchase diapers at the lowest possible price; maximizing the fund dollars.

How to Host a Diaper Drive

What is a “diaper drive”?
A diaper drive is like a food drive, only with diapers. The diaper drive can be a few days or a few weeks, depending on the nature of the organization hosting the drive. During that time, people bring their diaper donations and place them in the collection box, usually located in a central location, such as a lobby or office.

Diaper Drives are our biggest source of diaper donations.

Organize a diaper drive? It sounds involved and complicated…
Actually, organizing a diaper drive is fairly simple.

1. Get permission from the school, church or business.

2. Work with your organization to set the dates for the drive. The dates can be for a week or a month, or any other time frame that will work best for your organization.

3. Promote the diaper drive with posters, flyers, letters, emails, newsletter or bulletin announcements – whatever communication works best for your organization. This part isn’t so hard because we can help! We have some flyers you can modify with the dates and location of the diaper drive. We also have sample letters and announcements that you can use.

4. Collect diapers. We can provide a collection box for you and at the end of the drive, you can drop off the diapers off or we will be glad to pick up the donations.

Easy!

Okay, maybe I could do that. How do I get started?
Contact us and tell us that you want to help organize a diaper drive. We can help you get started.

Where will the diapers go?
We believe that neighbors should support their own neighbors. Therefore, Nestlings Diaper Bank will donate diapers in the communities where diaper drives are held. We are well established in Ottawa County and work with over a dozen agencies here.

I own/manage my own business. Is there a way my business can partner with The Nestlings Diaper Bank?
Yes, we are always looking for creative ways to encourage our local community to get involved. Contact us and we’ll work together on a plan

The Most Requested Diaper Size

More than a dozen local organizations request diapers from Nestlings and receive them in the exact sizes they need for the families they are supporting that week.

The diaper size that continues to be the most requested is size 4.

So far in 2012 Nestlings has provided more than 10,000 size 4 diapers to local churches, food pantries, and shelters. Nestlings does not distribute to individuals.

Thanks to everyone who participated and posted their guesses on our Facebook page.

Get Started on the Coin Drive: 4 Creative Container Ideas

Have you begun collecting coins for our ‘Change for Change’ coin drive?

Raiding the recycle bin is an easy place to find a container to collect coins in but the creative container ideas below might inspire you to get started right away – or to add a second container – for your coin drive.

1. Decorate an old wipes container as a great reminder of how necessary “the change” is.

2. Place a jar near the washing machine with a note that says “Did you check your pants?” A reminder not only to empty the change from the pockets before throwing pants in the machine, but a reminder of a similar phrase many moms have said to their little ones while peaking into their diaper “Let me check your pants”. Other clever saying ideas: Pamper a Baby, Share the Luv, or Give a Little Huggie.

3. Empty formula cans are a great reminder of a baby’s basic needs and they are easy to decorate. Cut a slot in the plastic lid for adding change.

4. Collect your bounty in a booty; throw change into a little baby shoes.

Every 25 pennies will buy at least one diaper so get started today.

Have fun with it! Please share pictures of your creative container on our Facebook page or tell us where you will be collecting coins (home, office, etc). Thank you so much for supporting Nestlings!

Photos and Ideas thanks to Katie from ABC and 123 Learning.

Filled coin containers will be collected at Pumpkinfest in downtown Zeeland October 4, 5, and 6. Nestlings will be on the corner of Main & Elm helping with the wood and glue sculptures (a very popular attraction you might be familiar with if you have attended Pumpkinfest in the past) After counting the coins Nestlings will be sure to recycle all the containers collected.
